Spain occupies third place in the ranking of the most attractive countries to invest in energy transition,

according to various studies, published for 10 years by the research company BloombergNEF.

In this way, Spain advances three places in a ranking that this year is led by the Netherlands, with a score of 2.88 points out of 5,

followed by Denmark (2.86) and Spain, with 2.64 points.

Among the enormous amount of data included in the report, Spain’s 5th position by volume of investment in renewable assets stands out,

with a total of 11,000 million dollars in 2020, behind China, the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Spain is also in the top 10 of countries with the highest penetration of wind and solar energy. Specifically,

it climbs to sixth position, behind Denmark, Uruguay, Lithuania, Ireland and Germany.

Our country also stood out for the addition of new wind capacity, a classification in which it rises to third position, behind China and the United States.

Interestingly, Spain has 1% of the world’s wind capacity, but accounted for 4% of the new capacity added in 2020.

Despite the fact that 2020 was a record year for investment in the energy transition,

both in Spain and globally, investors allocated 67,000 million dollars less to clean energy in emerging markets compared to the richest countries, according to the new study from BNEF.

These results suggest that investors hastily retreated from developing markets to refocus on richer countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to BNEF’s annual Climatescope survey,

the volume of investment in the energy transition in developing countries fell by 10% between 2019 and 2020.

Investors deployed more funds in OECD countries, whose risk is typically lower,

which it marked a significant change from previous years, when these fast-growing economies attracted the majority of new funds being deployed.

In 2020, developed countries received 262 billion dollars (57%) of the global investment in the energy transition, which includes renewable energy,

electric vehicles and electrified heating.

Developing economies received $195 billion, which represents the remaining 43%. By contrast, emerging markets received a slight majority of funds globally in 2019 and around 59% in 2017.
